Lysaght Strengthens Leadership Team with Three New Directors

Lysaght, a leading intellectual property law firm with a history spanning nearly 80 years, has announced the promotion of three senior team members - Richard Stilwell, Tim Noel, and Caroline Johnstone - to Director positions, effective 1st April 2025. These appointments mark a significant step in the firm's long-term strategy to build on its legacy while positioning for growth in a rapidly evolving IP landscape.

Richard Stilwell, a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney, has been with Lysaght since 2015 after previously working for a Top Tier IP law firm. He holds a Master's degree in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Leeds and qualified as an Attorney in 2018 through Nottingham Trent University, passing with Distinction. Richard leads Lysaght's contentious trade mark practice, whilst he also maintains a senior role within the Patents Department. Known for his client-centric focus and pragmatic approach, Richard is directly involved in the firm's relationships with agents and clients.

Tim Noel, a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney, joined Lysaght in 2014 and is the Head of Lysaght's Trade Marks Department as well as supporting Lysaght’s contentious trade mark practice. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of the West of England and qualified as an Attorney in 2018. Known for his measured and client-focused approach, Tim has almost 20 years of IP experience and contributes significantly to the firm's collaborative culture and reputation for reliability.

Tim and Richard represent the firm at various major international events, including INTA, AIPPI, FICPI and PTMG, and both currently sit on the INTA's Trade Mark Office Practices Committee.

Caroline Johnstone joined Lysaght in 2022 as Head of Operations. She leads across finance, HR, company secretarial duties, and wider business operations. A Chartered Accountant, accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, she has held senior positions in both financial services and professional services. Caroline also holds the Institute of Directors Certificate in Company Direction and brings a strong commercial and regulatory lens to Lysaght's leadership.

David Booth, Director and Head of Technical and Digital, commented: "We are delighted to welcome Richard, Tim, and Caroline to the board. Each of them brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to the values that make Lysaght unique. In a market where larger firms often rely on scale and automation, our clients value the personal service, specialist knowledge, and responsiveness we offer – particularly across complex and less-served jurisdictions. These appointments reinforce our commitment to maintaining that high standard while preparing the firm for future growth."

Louise Audhlam-Gardiner, Director and Head of Patents and Designs, added: "Bringing Richard, Tim and Caroline onto the board marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Lysaght.  Their promotions are not only a reflection of individual talent, but also a statement of confidence in our future.  Richard, Tim and Caroline each bring energy and enthusiasm, as well as a depth of insight and leadership that will help us continue to adapt and grow, while holding firmly to the high standards and personalised service which Lysaght is known for."
