ARIPO - Accession by Cape Verde
On 14th July 2022, the Republic of Cabo Verde (commonly known as Cape Verde) deposited instruments of accession to the Lusaka Agreement, Banjul and Harare Protocols of ARIPO. Consequently, Cape Verde has become the 22nd contracting state to the ARIPO Agreement, and from 14th October 2022, applicants will be able to designate Cape Verde in ARIPO applications for patents, industrial designs, utility models, trade marks and the protection of traditional knowledge rights.
As reported previously, Cape Verde also recently approved accession to the Madrid Protocol, the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, and the Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin, with effect from 6th July 2022. As a result, any international application filed on or after that date will automatically include the national designation of Cape Verde.
With regards to PCT regional phase applications making use of the ARIPO route, applicants will be able to designate Cape Verde as one of the ARIPO member states in any PCT applications with an international filing date falling on or after 14th October 2022.
